Fluffy Duck Historic Update No. 5

Time marches on and the Duck is getting closer. From an organising standpoint everything is falling into place, CAMS, Competition venues, etc, but we still need officials. If you are not planning to compete than why not be part of the event by being an official.

In order to run the event we still need;

  • Timing official at Ringwood
  • Tennis ball spotter at Ringwood
  • Control official at Awaba

And if we have some extras

  • Passage Control officials
  • Video Camera Person (with own camera)

We were out surveying the route last week end and about 4 or 5 km's of what was 'bordering on rough' dirt road is now 'Rough' dirt road, due to the storms of resent weeks. I have driven both my TR7 and my father's 2500 Triumph over this piece of road in the last month without any problems, but it was second gear and back to first gear for that 4 or 5 km's.

So if a bit of rough dirt road is not something you want to drive your car over, well you need to think about whether to compete.
The Fluffy Duck will be an endurance, action packed day of motorsport, a real test of man (or is that person) and machine.

Starting in Wyong, competitors will travel via an Economy Run to Ringwood Hillclimb, using a marked up map, where they will have a lunch break, followed by some Motorkhana and Special Tests. Crews then travel via map reading navigation through the Hunter Valley to Awaba where they will have a dinner break followed by some Khanacross Tests. During the day competitors will have lots of things to keep them busy, Point points, Photo ID points, Route Check Boards, Un-maned Passage Controls, and the distance travelled check.

The Duck has issued the challenge, thrown down the gauntlet, now it's time for competitors to take up that challenge, pick up that gauntlet and enter the 2010 Fluffy Duck Historic.

Tune in next Fluffy time, same duck channel and hear Quack McMallard say, "Thank goodness that's over"

Fluffy Duck Historic Rally Update 4

The Fluffy Duck is getting closer by the day, it wont be long and the challenge that is the Fluffy Duck will be upon us.

Get your Entry Form and Preliminary Supplementary Regulations now.

We are still in need of some officials, (see list below) so if you are not planning to compete then why not be part of the event by officiating.

  • 2 X Passage controls in the morning about ½ hour from the start
  • 1 X Passage controls in the afternoon
  • M3. – Awabawac Park
  • 5 X Time keepers – motorkhana/special tests at Ringwood
  • Video camera person, with own camera (or without)

All is go for the competition events so there will be plenty of opportunity to get those wheels spinning, with special tests and motorkhana tests at Ringwood as well as Khanacross tests at Awabawac Park.

The Navigational sections have been driven over three times with one more trip over the route planed for the next few weekends. The instructions have been checked with no problems found.

Roll on Saturday the 13th of March

Stay tuned next time, same Fluffy challenge, same Fluffy time and hear Quack McMallard say, "A pessimist is an optimist in possession of all the facts."

2010 Fluffy Duck Historic Rally Update No. 3

The Fluffy Duck is getting closer every day, are you ready? The Fluffy Duck will take place on Saturday the 13th of March 2010. So make sure you mark that date in your diary or on your calendar or tattooed across you forehead.

Some time in the next three weeks the final survey of the route will take place. The course checker has looked at the instructions and could find no problems so all is looking well. Remember that this years Fluffy Duck has 27km of dirt road. The dirt road is for the most part good, but there are a few km's of what I would call "bonny' road. Most of the survey trips were done using my TR7 which only has around four inches of ground clearance, so the roads are not that bad.

Starting in Wyong, the first section will take competitors to Ringwood Hillclimb for some Motorkhana and Special Tests; from there competitors will head north into the Hunter Valley, ultimately ending up at Awabawac Park for some night Khanacross. The Fluffy Duck is going to be an endurance event so, ‘be prepared for a long day’.

The event will be limited to thirty entries, so make sure you get your entry in as soon as you get the Supp Regs and be part of the adventure that is. 'The Fluffy Duck Historic Rally'. A true multi disciplined motor sporting event, designed to challenge man and machine.
Keep an eye on the AHRG Web site, www.historicrally.com.au for up to date information on everything Fluffy.

The promotional DVD which explain all about the event is available now, contact Jim Pope 4352 3331 or e-mail jimpope@westnet.com.au. For a copy. Also available on DVD is 'The Duck Report' which covers a number of events held during 2009 plus we still have a limited number of the 2009 Fluffy Duck Report.

Officials; well we will need a few to make the Fluffy Duck work, please see below a list of jobs we will need officials for and if you are not planing to compete, well think about being part of the event as an official;

  • P1. – Wyong – Not far from the start
  • 2 X Passage controls in the morning about ½ hour from the start
  • P2. – Kurri Kurri – late morning to lunch time
  • M2. – Ringwood
  • 2 X Passage controls in the afternoon
  • M3. – Awabawac Park
  • 5 X Time keepers – motorkhana/special tests at Ringwood
  • and, not vital, but it would be nice -
    • Video camera person, with own camera
    • An apprentice – someone to learn the ropes – to take over organzine the Fluffy Duck

In the next Update I will talk about more aspects of the event in detail so, stay tuned for the next exciting Update, same Fluffy time, same Fluffy channel, and hear Quack McMallard say, "It’s all so unfair".

2010 Fluffy Duck Historic Rally Update No. 2

The Fluffy Duck is back, that's right the Fluffy Duck Historic Rally is back.

Survey work has been completed for now; a final run over the route will take place closer to the date just to check nothing has changed. The course is 400km long with 27km of dirt road. The dirt road is for the most part good, but there are a few km's of what I would call "bonny' road. Most of the survey trips were done using my TR7 which only has around four inches of ground clearance, so the roads are not that bad.

Navigation; The first section of the Fluffy Duck will be map reading navigation using marked up maps supplied with your event package. These will be maps with the correct route marked with a high lighter, so it will be just a matter of following the map. The second section will use a clear plastic overlay which will be grided up to match the grid lines on the map, and will also have all the via points plus direction of entry and or exit marked. Competitors will then need to determine the shortest mapped route, travelling through all via points, entering or exiting as directed. This section will be 'shortest mapped route point to point', so what does that mean? It simply means you must travel from each via point to the next via point in the order given in your instructions. Both sections will have some 'route chart' navigation; this will be used in areas where the map is not clear or to get competitors through towns.

The event will be limited to thirty entries, so make sure you get your entry in as soon as you get the Supp Regs and be part of the adventure that is. 'The Fluffy Duck Historic Rally'. A true multi disciplined motor sporting event, designed to challenge man and machine.

We are still planning to run the Fluffy Duck in March 2010 in the hope of escaping the hot weather and storms of February, but that, like so much at the moment will depend on a number of factors, so stay tuned.

Keep an eye on the AHRG Web site, www.historicrally.com.au for up to date information on everything Fluffy.

In the next Update I will talk about more aspects of the event in detail so, stay tuned for the next exciting Update, same Fluffy time, same Fluffy channel, and hear Quack McMallard say, "Nobody told me there would be days like these".

2010 Fluffy Duck Update No.1

The Duck is back, that's right the Fluffy Duck Historic Rally is back.

Event organiser Jim Pope gives us an overview of the planning and format of the 2010 Fluffy Duck Historic.

We are in the very early stages of organising the event, but we hope to stay with a similar format to the 2009 event. Starting in Wyong and heading via an Economy Run/Navigational section to Ringwood Hillclimb where competitors will contest Motorkhana and Special Tests. After the lunch break (at Ringwood) the route will take competitors through the Hunter Valley and then to Awaba for the dinner break, this will be followed by some night Khanacross tests, with the event finishing at Awaba. The competition tests are dependent on the availability of Westlake’s Automobile Club’s Awabawac Park venue as well as MG Newcastle’s Ringwood venue, so stay tuned.

The event will be around 350 km's long, give or take a few km's, over some well travelled roads as well as some roads that have not been used in events before (or at least events that I have been involved in) plus some roads that have not been used for some years. But there is a price to pay, there will be quite a few km's of dirt road. We are surveying the route at the moment so there will be more on this in coming Updates.

Navigation will be as per the 2009 Fluffy Duck, a combination of map reading plus route chart, I would describe it as 'middle of the road navigation' not to hard but not easy either. If you can read a map, you should not have any problems. The Fluffy Duck will have NO QUESTIONS, but will have Route Check Boards, Photo Points, Photo ID Points, plus the competition events and Economy Run and not to forget the Distance Travelled Check. We are making a promotional DVD which will explain all about the event which will be available in about a month, contact Jim Pope 4352 3331 or e-mail jimpope@westnet.com.au for a copy.

In the next Update Jim will talk about various aspects of the event in detail so, tune in next time for the next exciting Update, same Fluffy time, same Fluffy channel, and hear Quack McMallard say, "let us sit upon the carpet and tell sad tales of woe".

Heart of the Hunter 2009

Event director and club president Geoff Thomas set an event for all with this year's Heart of the Hunter. There was a classification for experienced navigators with much map reading and some tulip style navigation, and for those wishing to take it a bit easier there was a straight forward route chart category. Then, for those just wanting to experience the event without having to have CAMS licences a "Register Run" was provided and the Route Chart instructions were supplied to those entered in this category.
